Holding his brush with a shy smile, HONMA begins to mark with his favorite colors—this is his style. As he chats with his favorite staff members, he begins to create, using anything that comes to mind from brushes to sponges and sometimes even scraps of metal. When someone peeks at his unfinished work, he hides it a little and with a happy glint in his eyes he playfully says "Hey, don't look." But when his piece is complete, he beams with pride and eager to show it to everyone he calls out "Look, look!" With each piece he creates, Honma's confidence grows and his world expands. - Sun Road
- About Sun Road -
Established in 1992, Sun Road is a non-profit organization that promotes engagement with art as a form of self-expression. Initially, Sun Road provided a space where people who primarily lived at home could gather and enjoy activities such as cooking, watching movies, working with recycled aluminum cans and paper. They could start with activities that allowed them to relax, such as having tea and could lie down when they felt tired.
Poetry, calligraphy and painting provided outlets for those at Sun Road to express the joy, sorrow and even envy that arose in their everyday lives. The journey taken to complete any piece of work is filled with countless untold stories and so the staff and fellow participants worked together to ensure that everyone was supported and encouraged. As the activities continued, more and more people came to appreciate its participants' work, which led to the launch of Sun Road's unique rental art service in June 2012. After this Sun Road began to support the production and sale of art goods. Today, the non-profit works directly with companies, including those such as Starbucks, to provide a rotation of artworks for display and they continue to produce and sell art goods.
